Community Thankful for Return of the SSFL Work Group

Community members living near the Santa Susana Field Laboratory expressed appreciation and support for the return of the SSFL Work Group at its first meeting in over two years on February 5, 2014.

A standing room only crowd filled the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center to hear independent experts, community representatives, and agencies responsible for cleaning up SSFL present on the site’s contamination and cleanup plans.

The evening began with a brief video about the 1959 partial nuclear meltdown at SSFL and was followed by presentations about other accidents and releases at the site, the EPA survey of radioactive contamination in Area IV, the health effects of exposure to radiation, the federal program to compensate ill workers, the cleanup agreements, agency commitments to those agreements, the dismantlement and disposal of contaminated buildings, and Q & A.

Video from the evening can be viewed below. To read more about the successful Work Group relaunch meeting, visit www.ssflworkgroup.org.
